Spring Palace, 2016

This work discusses the degeneration of the concept of sex in contemporary China with modern satiric forms and the discrimination of gender identity. In this artwork, I use neon which a symbol of fantasy and modern to describe the Chinese traditional erotic painting. Different cultures and eras within China are combined to discuss such social issues as inequality of the sexes, censorship and personal expression.
This work utilises modern commercial strategies to express the open attitude to sex of ancient culture in relation to more conservative attitudes of contemporary China. I use google translate to interpret the poetry which surrounds erotic paintings from the three different dynasties that I have chosen to reproduce in Neon. The ridiculousness, nonsense and sarcasm created is a result of the collision between different eras, and cultural combinations.
